Well that didn't go exactly as planned

I arrived at the bus stand in Kandy to find about 300 people in line and literally no buses. I waited an hour, getting mildly frantic, calling various advising-type people, and decided (on the advice of the nice guy behind me in line) to take a trishaw to Colombo.

Yes: a trishaw. Usually this is a three-hour bus ride. We found a willing guy (who, surprisingly enough, didn't think we were bonkers) and set out. We saw pretty lanterns, lots of free-food-booths, picturesque lighted temples, crowds of gawkers, and most prominently, the taillights of ten bajillion other vehicles. I haven't got a lot of time right now, but let's just say: seven hours later and with a hanky tied over my face bandit-style, I finally made it to a friend's house, where I downed a large whiskey and collapsed into bed. This, I think, is an adventure I will remember a long time. More later... after my 12 hour bus to Jaffna. Tonight we will ride!

I crack myself up sometimes.

Go by train next time, it costs less than 100 rupees. Pay a guy 50 rupees to jump into a carriage window (whilst the train is still pulling into the station) to reserve a seat for you.

Alright! - Sam

That one may win you the loopy award for May! Reminds me, though: the brother of a friend of mine once bought a threewheeler in Mumbai and drove it around India. Now that's bonkers.. but how cool!

In April I took the bus back from Dambulla to Colombo. Standing room only for 4 hours. Crushed perspiring bodies, stench of vomit(someone had thrown up in the middle of the bus) and the heat. There were times I was tempted to get off the bus and catch a tuk-tuk home. So actually, catching the tuk-tuk wasnt the worst option available!

le bis - i wish it was cool and not bloody idiotic.

Sam - this was vesak+1, so the train line was worse. but i'll take it under advisement. usually when i take the train, i splurge the Rs200 and go first class. what a rich honky.

haakon - they have nice trophies at that sporting goods store next to the koffeepot. i'll wait til the may competition officially closes and then i'll expect my loopy award. should get bloody something for my troubles...

vram - that sucks, mate! i do some of my best meditating on such buses.
